Project Hermes
Our client, Robert Bosch Corporation, builds security systems that
coordinate heterogeneous components. These systems are complex,
distributed and embedded and must process information from different
sensors to determine where to signal an alarm based on its state. The
problem is that most of the work is manual, and a designer must evaluate
the tradeoffs between the cost of the components and desired security
level to decide where to place sensors, actuators, and processing agents
in the system. In addition, the designer must determine how to network
components together to make sure there are no bottlenecks, and that the
network provides reliable and timely information flow from sensors to
security and safety monitors.
Team Serendipity developed the “Configuration Assistant” tool which
supported the design and analysis of building security and safety
systems. The CA should support the design and analysis of the system’s
network configuration. The extension should support network components
and their particular properties (e.g., bandwidth) in such a way that the
designer can evaluate reliability and performance.
